“Palladium” is a full-blooded, white-knuckle thriller set in Istanbul, meeting-place of Europe and Asia. Do you like high-stakes thrillers? Try this.

“Palladium”: how it begins

Palladium begins like this:

The Janissary warrior, Yusuf Ali-Bey, had triumphed in countless battles. He had slain numberless foes.

He had never known horror such as this.

Today, Constantinople, great capital of the Christians, would fall. Glory would rain down on him. But only if he, the commander, fulfilled a task so strange he could scarcely believe his orders.

"Palladium" is an Istanbul thriller by Leigh Turner

I first conceived the idea of writing Palladium, an Istanbul thriller, when I visited the city in 2011. I started writing the book in 2012 (for a full timeline, see my “how to get published” post). It was thrilling to see the book published by a US publishing house.

Palladium was also the first book I published under my own name, rather than my old pseudonym “Robert Pimm”. I introduced Robert Pimm back in 2014, when the Foreign Office were being spectacularly unhelpful about my writing. After I retired, I retired Robert Pimm, too.

What’s Palladium all about? It’s a full-blooded white-knuckle thriller. The first section of the book includes flashbacks to the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. You can read a sample on my Palladium page on this site. Click on the link for a few sample chapters.

Several Turkish friends have asked me: when will there be a Turkish translation? My friends: I’m working on it. Palladium paints a rich, colourful portrait of Istanbul and Turkey that I am hoping will appeal to a broad range of Turks and lovers of what we are slowly learning to call Türkiye.

John Savage in therapy: an interview

John Savage: ‘I won’t talk more about what happened that winter in Moscow. It’s between me, the Office and – I suppose the Russians know the whole story. Moscow was worse for Clare than it was for me. She suffered most. Obviously. She’s dead. I’m alive.’

Slow publishing: a case study

Slow publishing is not necessarily bad publishing. Let’s look at how a Russian banker’s murder in 1993 and the Gezi Park protests of 2013 led to publication of my international thriller “Palladium” in 2022.
